On behalf of our city, I was proud to be one of three presenting sponsors at Los Angeles Business Journal's 12th annual event honoring the 100 fastest growing private companies in the Los Angeles region. Held at the spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA on November 11 and catered by Patina, it was truly a night to remember.
As winners of the first-ever Most Business Friendly City award presented by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, El Segundo has a bit of experience when it comes to business success stories and we were especially pleased to see several of our own firms on LABJ's list.
We were additionally honored to be the only city in the county represented at this important event, and I thank the many El Segundo business leaders and fellow colleagues who also attended.
In scanning the list of honorees, it was particularly encouraging to note the sheer diversity and scope of the companies recognized this year. Among the business categories: pet food products, information technology, environmental consulting, fashion, financial services, and coffee sales.
In this difficult and challenging economic period, these firms are truly an inspiration and provide a much-needed morale boost to the many budding entrepreneurs out there hoping to build their business dreams--as well as those CEOs who may have fallen upon tough times but continually strive to find that light at the end of the tunnel.
It is a testament to how vision, ingenuity, integrity, innovation and plain hard work can overcome any financial obstacles that might be prevalent in the marketplace.

GEARING UP FOR GEHRY
|
About a year ago, a Los Angeles Business Journal advertisement recognizing El Segundo as the county's most business friendly city sparked the interest of world-renowned architectural icon Frank Gehry and his firm Gehry Partners, who had outgrown their space in West Los Angeles.
Within a few months, the firm formally announced plans to acquire two buildings in El Segundo to establish its new world headquarters. So it was only appropriate that El Segundo played a major role at the LABJ event at Disney Hall. One of the Los Angeles' foremost architectural landmarks, the building was designed by none other than Gehry himself and is one of the master's most celebrated works.
Gehry and 160 employees will assume 75,000 square feet of space in a campus developed by NSB Associates. The property, located between Utah Avenue and Alaska Avenue just west of Aviation Boulevard, is expected to be occupied by the second quarter of 2009.

EL SEGUNDO FIRMS GROWING UP FAST

Three dynamic technology-based El Segundo firms made the Los Angeles Business Journal list of fastest growing companies and the City couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments.
• Recently recognized as a "best place to work" by the LABJ, Kurtzman Carson Consultants pioneered a web-based technology system and services methodology to automate complicated corporate restructuring, class action, transaction support and litigation support services for its clientele.
• Formed in 2002 as one of the first companies to offer search marketing solutions on a performance basis, Vantage Media is a true pioneer in its industry and has developed into one of the largest integrated media and marketing firms in the country.
• A rags to riches business success story, Wpromote started out as one man in a dorm room in 2001. Since then, the company has grown exponentially and is now ranked the number one search marketing firm in the US.
Meanwhile, another homegrown success, El Segundo-based computer product online sales firm pcRUSH.com, was also a presenting sponsor at the LABJ event. CEO Jeff Adise had the distinct honor of announcing the top two fastest growing companies, and our City congratulates him and pcRUSH.com.
